Reflection from Bishop Waggoner
This past Sunday I was at All Saints’, Richland during the morning for a festive reception in honor of the Rev. Jan Griffin on her last Sunday before entering retirement.  In the afternoon, I was at Holy Trinity, Sunnyside where I presided at the ordination of Linda Mosier Hale to the Diaconate.   Both events took place in a spirit of celebration and were joyous, even though we had to acknowledge the bittersweet reality of All Saints and Jan saying goodbye to each other.

Both events were also about the known and the unknown.  We celebrated enthusiastically in community what we knew, that Jan and All Saints had shared holy years together and that Linda was indeed called to be a Deacon.  Yet at both there was the unknown:  What will the future hold for Jan (I have some ideas) and for the congregation?  What will Linda’s diaconal ministry emerge to be in her partnership with the faithful, committed congregations of the Lower Yakima Valley (I have some ideas about that, too)?

Looking back on the two events, I am reminded of two things:  (1) That ministry does not go away, it goes on – in new and different ways, often expanding us in ways we could not predict; and (2) That the God who has brought us to where we are doesn’t go away either, but leads us onward – still present still speaking.  Somehow in the midst of the unknown, it is what is known that matters most.  And we continue to celebrate that truth best by being open to the future.
