The Rev. Jacqueline (Jackie ) Dickson 1939-2010
The Rev. Jackie Dickson, former rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Spokane Valley, died July 13 at home after a long illness. She was born in Massachusetts and was a registered nurse before entering seminary. She graduated from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1979 and served as an associate at St. Clare’s, Pleasanton, CA, and St. John’s in Kirkland before moving to Spokane where she was one of the first women priests to serve in parish ministry. She served at Holy Spirit from 1986-1994 before retiring. During that time she was chair of the Commission on Ministry, was the dean of the Spokane Deanery and was active in Cursillo. She earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in 1992 from San Francisco Theological Seminary and was certified as a pastoral counselor. After retirement she continued her ministry in pastoral counseling and spiritual direction. Survivors include her husband, Bill, and their six adult children. Please keep all of them in your prayers. Services are scheduled at 3 p.m. Monday, July 19 at St. John’s Cathedral with a reception following. Condolences may be sent to Bill Dickson at 14820 E. 8th Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99037. Sunnyside to Host Congregational Development Workshop (July 21)
The Rev. Paul Lebens-Englund, Canon for Congregational Development, will offer a regional congregational development workshop from 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 at Holy Trinity, Sunnyside. The workshop, hosted by Holy Trinity’s vestry, will serve as an introduction to some of the core concepts of congregational development. The workshop is aimed at vestry members and other key congregational leaders, but is open to anyone who would like to know more about planned change in our congregations. Carillon and Labyrinth (July 18)
St. John’s Cathedral in Spokane will offer a carillon concert by Byrl Cinnamon and an opportunity to walk the labyrinth from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 18.
Eastern Oregon Diocese to Offer Session on Matthew (Aug. 5-8)
The Rev. Mary June Nestler, Canon for Ministry Formation in the Diocese of Utah, will lead a session on “Matthew’s Gospel: Insights for Studying, Praying and Preaching,” Aug. 5-8 at Ascension School Camp and Conference Center in Cove, OR. Cathedral Accepting Items for Haiti Benefit (Aug. 28)
St. John’s Cathedral is accepting items for a large rummage sale to help fund a mission project in Cazale, Haiti. Items may be left at the Cathedral in an area near the Great Hall. Nominees Sought for Diocesan Elections (July 31)
Only a few nominations have submitted for diocesan elections at the Oct. 15-17 Diocesan Convention, according to Marcia O’Leary, nominating committee chair. Deadline is July 31. Nominations are being accepted for Diocesan Council (lay and clergy orders); Standing Committee (lay and clergy orders); deputies to General Convention (lay and clergy orders) and Directors of the Corporations.
