General Convention 2012
May 11th, 2012 | Posted by in NewsThe Episcopal Church’s General Convention will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana July 3-13, 2012.
General Convention is the bi-cameral legislative body of The Episcopal Church, which gathers every three years to adopt an operating budget, to consider resolutions related to the exercise of mission and ministry, to worship, to learn, and to network.
While there are often fairly mundane tasks to accomplish while gathered in Convention, there are also frequently issues that come before Convention that have a direct impact on the life and work of the local church. Whether it’s increases or decreases in program funding and staffing, or Convention statements on public policy, or liturgical renewal and innovation, Convention can’t help but to affect our work here in the Diocese of Spokane
Deputies from the Diocese of Spokane to this summer’s General Convention are: Mary Beth Jorgensen (chair), Ken Beck, Robin Biffle, Bill Ellis, Colin Haffner, Paul Lebens-Englund, Pia Longinotti, Lena Lopez-Schindler, Kristi Philip, and Gretchen Rehberg. In addition, Bishop Waggoner will sit in the House of Bishops and will co-chair the Convention Committee on Communication.

I beg to differ on one point: There are no truly “mundane” tasks at General Convention.
The General Convention exercises exclusive authority over our Constitution & Canons, Prayer Book, Hymnal, and Lectionary, liturgical calendar, and every line item of the Episcopal Church budget. The Convention elects most members of Standing and Joint Committees and Commissions, Boards and Agencies of the church, and specifies the scope of their work.
Everything the Convention does is important to someone. Every proposed resolution gets a public hearing. Even something as seemingly routine as a procedural change is important to the fundamental principle of “all voices equally heard.”
