Flannery Lecture: “Empty Religion”  (March 18)
Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson will present the Flannery  Lecture at 7:30 p.m. March 18 at Cataldo Hall on the Gonzaga University campus.  Theme is “Empty Religion:  Islam and Christianity’s Common Peril.”  Johnson is Professor of New Testament at Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta.  A prolific author, his current research concerns the literary, moral and religious dimensions of the New Testament.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

Called to Care Conference (March 20)
The Faith and Environment Network’s ‘Called to Care’ conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 20 at Holy Trinity Episcopal  Church, 1832 W. Dean Ave. in Spokane.  Registration is $15 and includes lunch. Topic: Spokane Alliance Sustainable Communities and Earth Ministry.  For information call 509.294.3944.

Spiritual Direction and Narrative  (March 20)
Dr. Janet Ruffing of Yale Divinity School will lead a spiritual direction workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 20 at Jepson Hall on the Gonzaga University campus. The workshop is sponsored by Gonzaga’s Religious Studies Department and St. Joseph Family Center.  The workshop is intended for spiritual mentors, directors, pastors and others who are interested in growing in appreciation of the sacred stories of others.  The $30 registration fee includes lunch.  For information contact Sr. Celeste Crine at 509.483.6495.

Cancer and End-of-Life Care  (March 24)
Hospice of Spokane will offer a national teleconference on options related to cancer diagnoses as well as loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional caregivers from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lenten Quiet Day (March 27)
A Lenten quiet day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Saturday, March 27, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Spokane.  The Rev. Nolan Redman will present meditations for quiet reflection and preside at the Eucharist.  The quiet allows time for prayer, meditation, journaling, reading, and/or walking.  Bring your books, journals, and a bag lunch for a refreshing time.  St. Stephen’s is located at South Perry Street and 57th Avenue.  For information call Carolyn Terry, 509. 448.3037.

Silent Retreat (April 9-11)
A silent retreat is scheduled April 9-11 at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center in
Spokane. Sr. Leslie from the Episcopal Community of the Holy Spirit in New York will be the leader. The retreat starts Friday evening and ends after lunch on Sunday. Cost is $170, with an optional Friday night dinner for $10. For more information, contact Carolyn Terry at 509.448.3037.

Preaching Workshop – Save the Date (June 18-20, 25-27)
The Commission on Ministry is planning a two-weekend preaching workshop  June 18-20 and 25-27 at St. John’s Cathedral in Spokane.  The session is open to anyone interested in honing their preaching skills but particularly for those seeking to be licensed to preach and those in the ordination process.  Stay tuned for more details.
