“Race isn’t real, but racism has caused real harm – not only to persons of color, but also to white persons, American society, and the Episcopal Church.” These facts motivate the basic Anti-racism training scheduled for April 19 and 26, at St. Andrew’s Church in Spokane. Each session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The 15-hour training is based on The Episcopal Church’s Seeing the Face of God in Each Other and has been tailored to the needs of our diocese by the Anti-Racism Task Force of the Diocese of Spokane. Participants will survey the history of racism, examine how it has affected their own lives, assess its historic and continuing impact in the Northwest, and go home with usable tools to continue to undermine racism. Lead trainers are Darcy James, Jane Nelson-Low, and Bob Runkle, assisted by other members of the diocesan training force.

This event will provide the required training for diocesan and congregational leaders. In addition, all members of congregations, ecumenical partners, and friends are invited and encouraged to participate. When several members of a congregation or a community attend together, they empower each other to work for positive change.

The training is offered free of charge, but advance registration is required because of space limitations. Registrants will be asked to commit themselves to attend both sessions. Lunch will be provided both days, and child care is available on request. Certificates of attendance will be given to participants who complete the full training.
