49th Annual Convention
On behalf of Bishop Waggoner and the Cathedral congregation of St. John the Evangelist, welcome to the 49th annual convention of the Diocese of Spokane. The program and hospitality committee of the convention has worked hard to insure that your needs are met and our time together is both enjoyable and productive. And by the way, changes to our heating system will insure that the nave is considerably warmer than it was for last year’s convention.
Our theme this year is “InsideOut” Sara Miles, our featured speaker, will lead us in conversation about what it means to be Church, both inside and outside our church buildings. Sara is the founder and director of The Food Pantry, and serves as the Director of Ministry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. She is the author of Jesus Freak, Feeding, Healing and Raising the Dead, and Take This Bread; A Radical Conversion. Starting with her own experience of encountering Jesus in a piece of bread, Sara will tell us of her conversion, and ask what it might look like for each of us to meet Jesus. She will then ask us to consider what our liturgies express, both verbally and visually, and what those expressions mean for our life between Sundays. Our time with her will conclude with a discussion of what it means to be Church every day, and the challenges and opportunities congregations face as they live into their respective missions.
I must add my special thanks to all of you who have taken your own time to participate in this convention. Your presence is important to the life of this diocese, and I remain grateful for your contributions, as do all the diocesan and cathedral staff.
